I would like to take a minute and talk a little about what I do. I have spent the last couple of months writing about natural remedies to many ailments, but I’d like to also tell you why I became so interested in blogging about them! This past February, my husband and I started a home based business that partners with an Amazing Company called Melaleuca Inc. Our family became very interested in removing the toxic and caustic chemicals from our home when we couldn’t get our son, Wyatt’s, allergies under control. I wasn’t convinced that putting him on a nasal spray 2 times a day every day was the best option for him, so I started doing some research. While researching and having so many concerns, I was approached by a great friend of mine, Misty Nichols, who introduced me to Melaleuca. I was very cautious at first because I had spent the last 3 years trying to find an honest opportunity to work from home and had been very unsuccessful. I had also invested over $3,000.00 in a business to only make a check of $70…which was devastating!

I certainly did not think that I could luck into an honest business to start from home AND convert my home over to safer products without a decent investment, so I was a great listener for a few days. Misty approached me again 2 weeks later to inform me that she had already made $200, and I was just blown away. I know it doesn’t seem like much but for a Stay at Home Mom, my goal was to just supplement my husband’s income, and $200 was a decent amount for bills. After hearing about Misty’s expected check, I decided to start asking questions. My main concern was how much I was going to be required to invest, right? When Misty said $29, I was sure I had heard her wrong, so I said, “$229.00?” She said, no…just $29 bucks! Well, I was so surprised, so I committed to see an online presentation to see if Melaleuca was going to be a fit for our family or not. I scheduled my presentation, and I was so excited to meet such an amazing team of moms and dads who were committed to helping you convert your home to safer products but also truly dedicated to helping other families earn an income if they chose to do so. After spending 14 months in a business that cost our family a lot of money, didn’t pay out, and had no support system…I was completely excited!

If any of you reading this have tried working from home or starting your own business, you know that you would normally need a nice amount of capital which would show your investment much much higher than $29 right? Well, I knew I had to give Melaleuca a shot after hearing the presentation. I understood completely that there was NO Risk! You were never stuck and you and your family can never get hurt! Just knowing that I was going to be spending less money than I was spending at the grocery store already, but that I could also earn an income doing something that meant something to me…I was ready to get started. I signed up in the middle of February for only $29 and have been a customer ever since. I have advanced my business to a status of Director II, and I have met so many amazing people along the way.

When talking about Melaleuca being an honest opportunity, please understand that it’s just that…HONEST with high INTEGRITY! They really care about people and helping them lead healthier lives. Melaleuca has been around since 1985…that’s 25 years! They have been recognized on numerous levels. You can even check out http://www.MelaleucaAwards.com and just see some of the awards they’ve received!

I know so many people are looking for additional income, whether it be supplemental or replacement income, and I just wanted to post about the great company that has helped our family in so many ways. It did take our family 3 years to find Melaleuca, and I would only hope that posting this blog will help find other moms and dads who would love the opportunity to spend more time with their children by being at home with them.

I understand there are large reservations when looking for something to do from home, but I can only hope that you reach out to me and let our team just educate you about what we do. There is never any pressure! We just enjoy the opportunity to teach others about what we do. If it’s a fit for you and your family, great! If it isn’t, well…just maybe you know someone who might be interested. We realize one thing can’t be a fit for every person out there, but you’ll never know unless you try something new right?!

I know that when I start wondering about something new, I like to do research. I like to cover my bases before I commit my precious time to something, so I would like to invite you to view a few videos from the link below If you like what you read, watch, and research, please contact me through MyEcoTeam and fill out our contact form!

http://www.YouTube.com/Melaleuca

I hope to write more about Melaleuca and help comfort anyone who has reservations and has read negative things about this company! I urge you to just consider seeing a presentation if this is a passion of yours. We truly enjoy helping others adopt a greener lifestyle!

Thanks for taking the time to read about Melaleuca today!

This topic just makes me cringe!! I hate the thought that these little creatures are so invasive!
Did you know that dust mites are part of the arachnid family, and they are sleeping with us!? This is just disgusting!! Do you have problems breathing in the morning when you wake up? Scratchy throat when you wake up? Do you experience worse allergy symptoms once you lay down at night? The true allergy isn’t to the bug itself…it’s to their EXCREMENT, which is even more nauseating. It’s not just our beds that contain these insects. These dust mites are on our favorite upholstered rocking chair, couches, couch pillows, in our carpet, on our kids stuffed animals, inside our mattresses, on our sheets and pillows, and many many other places. Dust mites feed on dead skin, and we shed about 1 ounce of skin per month. We are a feeding ground for these bugs, and they really like our beds! A typical full size bed can contain 2 MILLION dust mites that can more than double the weight of that mattress in 10 years!

Check out this Video ~

Here are a few ways to help rid your homes of these ugly and repulsive pests!

For Carpet ~ Get rid of it! Having hardwood/tile floors is a much better option since carpets are great habitats for these bugs. If getting rid of the carpet isn’t an option, there are special carpet treatments that can be used to reduce the population.

For Bedroom ~ First start off with your pillows. Place them in a zippered Allergen Impermeable Cover. I’ve also heard that you should use duct tape and tape the zipper edge because dust mites are so microscopic, that they can squeeze through the zippered area. The same idea should be used for the mattress allergen cover as well. You should also encase your mattress and box springs in these covers to prevent a nesting ground for these dust mites. The best option for your bed clothing is to wash the pillow cases, sheets, blankets, and mattress pad ONCE a week in water that reaches at least 130 degrees.

Another great idea is to make sure you are also washing your curtains that are in your bedroom. Anything that is great at collecting dust is most likely causing allergy issues. Also, when dealing with this issue in a child’s room…remember that using a Vaporizer or Humidifier is mostly likely allowing a more stable and pleasurable environment for the dust mites. They prefer humidity levels above 50%, so some parents could be helping them thrive with their children, and they don’t realize it! It’s also a great idea to dress your children in cotton clothing so that it’s absorbing their perspiration during the evening hours.

If you’re one that is very interested in changing your indoor air quality, it’s also a great idea to add an Air Purifier to your home to help improve the quality. You can also refer to a recent post of mine for a much cheaper option to Purifying your Home.

I’m not sure about you, but I’ve started this process because I’m a mission to reduce our allergy issues!

As parents, we’re quickly reminded of the first day we were told our child had an ear infection. I absolutely hated the day I heard that Wyatt had his first one; however, it’s bound to happen, right? Well, we were prescribed our first dosage of the famous Penicillin/Amoxicillin for his first one. I remember cringing as we filled his prescription. I didn’t want him to be in any pain, but I hated the idea of starting antibiotics. I’m not against them when they’re really needed; however, I feel they are being overused and easily prescribed. I have MANY people in my family who are highly allergic to the penicillin family, so my reservation was even greater due to the allergy situation in our family. Wyatt has only had 1 ear infection…which didn’t heal completely on his first round of antibiotic. When we went back in, he was prescribed Augmentin…a stronger form of antibiotic which is also in the Penicillin family. I had that mother instinct that just told me he wasn’t going to do well with this antibiotic, so I only gave him 1/2 the dosage with worries of how he would do. Within 30 minutes of the first 1/2 dose, he started swelling with hives from his face down. Everything from his ears, face, wrists, ankles, tummy….all covered in hives! Thank goodness I didn’t give the full dosage!!! Thank goodness for my mother’s instinct!

So on that note, I haven’t given him antibiotics since. I started doing extensive research on other ways you can help your child overcome an ear infection without giving antibiotics every time you turn around. Some people are hesitant to try natural remedies, but I wanted to take a moment and just throw some ideas and options out there for consideration to any parents out there who feel the same way

Did you all know that Garlic is a natural antibiotic? Did you know that you can use a recipe of garlic and olive oil to help relieve the pain associated with ear infections and clear them up in about 48 hours? Recipe is below! I have used this and it works! This is how I finally cleared up the ear infection from the round of antibiotics.

Boil 5 cloves of garlic with 1 spoonful of olive oil. Sieve and use the oil to treat the infection. Allow the oil to cool to luke warm before dropping into the ear. 2-3 drops should be sufficient. You can also check out local Naturopathic Physicians in your area. I have read that some recommend Allimax.

Did you also know that Melaleuca Oil is the scientific name for Tea Tree Oil? Melaleuca Oil is great for killing Bacterial Infections! For ear infections, Melaleuca Oil can be used to naturally treat them! Please note that you need a good quality Tea Tree Oil. For more information on a great product, email me. Please note that Melaleuca Oil is known for and used naturally for so many ailments. The Oil can be used as an Anti-fungal, Antiseptic, Antiviral, and Insecticide! A quick and easy natural recipe for an Ear Infection is listed below.

5-10 drop of Melaleuca Oil and about a Tablespoon of Olive Oil. Warm and mix together well. Use a few drops in the ear.

There are many different types of A/C filters out there, and I’m sure we all use different filters; however, I’d like to mention a few different filters and talk about how important it is to change these filters in a timely manner! A/C filters are responsible for removing allergens and contaminants from our homes. If we aren’t changing them the way we should, we are not only causing more physical issues for our families, we are actually raising our electric bill. By choosing to not change them every 30 days, as most of them require, you will see your electric bill go up. You’re making your A/C unit run harder and use more energy to do so. There are so many ways to keep your indoor air quality with less toxins, and changing your A/C filters regularly contributes ALOT!

I would say that most of us use a Standard A/C Filter — a filter that is made of spun fiberglass and has a cardboard frame, which requires us to change them every 30 days. This type of filter removes about 10 percent of the airbourne pollutants in our homes; however, they are usually the larger particles. These filters don’t do the best in filtering smaller allergens. By not changing these filters every 30 days, you will see a huge difference in your electric bill…and if you’re like us…many changes in allergy problems.

You may also use Pleated Filters — these filters are designed by folding the filter material back and forth, allowing for a larger surface area. These filters can remove up to 40%, and they can go a bit longer before needing changed. They need to be changed every 3 months. You can get more time our of the filters; however, I like the idea of changing monthly to assure I have a clean filter!

Electrostatic Filters — these filters can remove up to 90% of particles, but they can cost up to $100. These filters need to be changed once every 3 months as well. Electrostatic filters that have an electric charge that collects the contaminants.

High Efficiency Particulate Arresting Filter or HEPA Filters — These filters can trap up to 99.97% contaminants which include smoke, pet dander, dust, and many other small allergens.

I started paying closer attention to my filters and how often to change them once I started having continuous headaches and allergy problems. After converting our home to safer and non-toxic household products, I decided to look further into our indoor air quality. I added house plants and started myself on a schedule to make sure my filters were changed in the time frame required for the type of filter that we purchased.

If you are tired of making trips to the store to purchase filters and would like the convenience of ordering your filters online, I’d like to share a website with you. Our family purchases our filters from http://hvac-parts-online.com/ They have great customer service, and they also have an option for you to be placed on an email schedule to remind you that you are due for your filter change!

Anxious to post again tomorrow!

Some of you may have heard about VOCs, but maybe you haven’t really given thought to what they really are and how they could be affecting you and your family?

VOCs — Volatile Organic Compounds — These compounds are emitted from certain liquids and solids all around your home. VOCs are located in more places than your home; however, the concentrations are up to ten times higher inside your home. We discuss our homes due to women being at home more than men, if they’re working…but what about the garage? Men usually like to spend time in their garages, wood shops, barns, etc, and they are loaded with VOCs! Due to the concentrations being so much higher in your home and garage, and knowing that we spend most of our time inside our homes—we are ingesting these toxic fumes, which in turn could be causing our allergies, congestion, headaches, etc.

Here are some Examples!

Cleaning Supplies — if you haven’t converted your home to safer nontoxic products yet

Paint

Lacquer

Pesticides

Building materials — A brand new house has SO MANY VOCs!!

Carpet

Copiers

Printers

Glues

Solvents

Markers

And the list goes on and on….

How many of you have at least one plant in your home? I hope everyone can at least say one; however, if you don’t have any…you’ll probably really enjoying reading this post!

Did you know that by having one house plant, you can reduce the pollution within your home significantly. Do you have allergies, headaches, congestion, sinusitis, etc? Believe it or not, adding one or more air purifying plants to you home can help!

We all learned early on in grade school that plants naturally convert carbon dioxide into oxygen, so you’ll find this information even more interesting .

Here is a list of plants that are great for the indoors!

The Peace Lily — — This house plant tolerates low light and requires heavy watering. It is known to absorb chemicals that linger in our homes as well like Benzene, Xylene, Ammonia, and Formaldehyde to just name a few. **If you have children in your home…this plant IS Poisonous to pets and children**

Golden Pothos — — This is one of the most favored and popular house plants today. They prefer indirect sunlight and moist soil. They’re great for hanging baskets or as a climbing vine. Once they become too long, just trim and re-pot them for another beautiful house plant. They are known for removing Xylene, Toluene, Benzene, Carbon Monoxide, and Formaldehyde.

Chrysanthemum — — This is commonly known as a MUM…something we all love to see in Autumn. Some enjoy greenery; however, others like color. This does both jobs. It helps purify the air and bring joyful color. Even though it’s seasonal, it sure does a great job…and once it’s spent…toss into your compost and treat yourself to another. I love recycling! This plant has also shown to remove toxic chemical like Ammonia, Benzene, Formaldehyde, and Xylene.

Bamboo Palm — — For those of you who enjoy adding some height to your home, this is a great choice. It will grow anywhere from 3-6 feet and adds moisture to a room, so this is a great choice for those dry winter months. This plant shows to eliminate chemical toxins like Xylene, Carbon Dioxide, Benzene, Formaldehyde, and Chloroform.

This is a short list of great and common household air purifying plants, and I’m sure you can find many many more! I encourage you all to add at least one to you home.

If you would like other ideas for purifying your home, other than plants, I encourage you to visit http://www.weatherprepared.com for more ideas on removing toxins from your home.

I have many other ideas to share on how to purify and recycle the air in our homes!

STAY TUNED!!

I’m not sure if any of you or anyone you may know has ever dealt with Pregnancy Itch or what is called PUPPPs, but I wanted to share my story and offer any help I could for those currently suffering. PUPPPs stands for “Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy.” This is a pregnancy induced rash that is the most horrible trauma to the skin I have ever experienced. This usually occurs within the 3rd trimester of pregnancy because our skin is stretching the most and the quickest in this trimester. From everything I read and gathered while I was struggling through this horrible rash, was that it’s pregnancy induced HIVES!!! It usually starts on your belly and then spreads to your inner thighs and feet, but I happened to be one of the rarest cases my OBGYN’s office had seen. Not only had this rash consumed my belly, but had taken over my inner thighs, my legs, my feet, in between my fingers, shoulders, and the left part of my face. Most doctor’s and research will show that it usually only stays on the belly and leg area, but I wasn’t the typical case. The only cure is to deliver the baby! I was already set up to be induced 2 weeks early, so you can imagine they had no problems keeping induction set due to my misery! The sad part of it all was that once I had delivered Wyatt and thought I was on the mend…a select few people DON’T get better after delivery…and I happened to be one of those few! On the day we were to be discharged and take our new baby home, it started spreading again!!! Everywhere! As our doctor made her rounds to discharge us, she then told me she’d have to refer me to her dermatology friend, and hopefully she could get me in as soon as possible. Wyatt was five days old when I was finally able to see her, and I was in complete agony! I couldn’t even hold Wyatt because his body heat would flare up the hives. I’ve never felt more helpless in my life. Not only did this cause emotional problems due to feeling like I wasn’t being a good mom, I was having an awful time nursing him considering! It was a goal of mine to make sure I was able to nurse him to at least a year, and this rash was trying to tell me otherwise. The dermatologist was able to help by prescribing Benedryl and Prednisone with Zyrtec (which helps with hives in you didn’t know that b/c I didn’t) and Ambien to sleep! It was absolutely awful!!! Even after 16 days after being home with a new baby and battling PUPPPs, I wasn’t fully back to myself until 6 weeks later. It was terrible. The cause behind PUPPPs is unknown; however, the research I did said that 70% of women who end up getting PUPPPs are pregnant with boys and the biopsies who a high level of testosterone. According to eMedicine from Web MD, this rash occurs in 1 out of 160-240 initial pregnancies. I guess you could say I was allergic to Wyatt! Who would have known?

Here was my Ultimate Cure for PUPPPs —- —- You can see band Aids on my fingers from my PUPPPs

How many of you are itching now? It make me itch just writing about it!

I wanted to write about this because I know there are moms out there right now who are struggling with it and probably have some doctors saying they have no clue what it is or what to do. I was so miserable and unable to enjoy the first days home with a new baby, so I want to let you know you’re not alone. When you get to a point of such misery, it’s easy to turn to whatever you can do to reduce the pain, so I also wanted to share the products I used and products I would now if it was happening to me again.

Benedryl, Aveeno Oatmeal Bath, Aveeno Skin Relief Body Wash, Skin Relief Moisturizing Lotion with Cooling Menthol, Zyrtec, Benedryl Topical Cream, and Ice Cold Baths. These were all things to just make the itching subside and to get a slight bit of relief. After knowing what I know now, I would have tried Tea Tree Oil too. Tea tree oil is so penetrating that it helps get to pain quickly!

A great recipe is …. 1 Oz of water with 5 drops of Melaleuca Oil mixed together. Use as a lotion and apply to your rash 2-3 times a day to see significant itching relief!

I remember not being able to wear tight clothing, and I kept the A/C set on 65 degrees and was freezing my husband to death! Just remember that it’s temporary and that your little one will be worth every minute of your pain and itching. I write that now, and I wouldn’t have wanted to hear that while I was itching with a hair brush!

Be careful to not scratch so hard so that you don’t set up for bacterial infections and scarring — also hard to do when you’re the one suffering…I know

If you’d like more information or someone to talk to about your struggle with this, I would be more than glad to chat! I would have loved to have had someone who understood my pain to talk to about it…especially if I thought they could help me get relief!

I have other natural remedy ideas as well…just email me!

***Here’s to the beautiful baby you’ll get after all that scratching***

Wow…this should help those of you who always wonder why taking vitamins is so important to our bodies. I’m basically going to list some Vitamins and Minerals and their benefits. This should help you understand why our bodies require a great vitamin supplement. Before I begin, I want to say that vitamins and minerals are NOT usually created by our bodies, so therefore, you can say they are required for life, right? Well, we all know that the common source for getting our vitamins is through our fruits and vegetables ; however, we’d have to be eating the recommended daily servings to do that. According to a report from the CDC (Centers of Disease Control) in 2009, only 14% of adults and 9.5 % of teens are getting two servings of fruit and three servings of vegetables per day. Due to this kind of statistic, you can see why doctors would recommend that everyone take vitamins!

These are a few of the vitamins I make sure I am taking on a daily basis. This is my before and after story from starting a vitamin regimen that I couldn’t possibly stop taking. Three months ago and many months before this, I was notorious for fixing a pot of coffee every morning and drinking around 5-6 cups of coffee up until around 2pm in the afternoon. I wasn’t one to drink much water throughout the day, and I noticed I was always ready for a nap about the time I put Wyatt down for a nap. Everyone knows that coffee is just a quick “pick me upper;” however, I just liked the taste of it so much…that I would sip on it all day!

A few months back, I came across Melaleuca, the company I’m working with, and they introduced me to the most amazing Vitamins ever! I wasn’t taking vitamins before this, so I wasn’t sure I was even interested. I decided it was healthy to promote this habit for my son, so I decided to start my whole family on them! All I can say is that I don’t take naps anymore, and I haven’t fixed a pot of coffee since! The amount of energy I have is ridiculous, and I feel great! If you think you might be looking for a great vitamin, Let me Help you Out! My son loves his vitamins, and tells everyone about them! The science behind their vitamins is unbelievable, and they have a 3 month money back guarantee! Try them for 90 days, and if we didn’t feel a difference, they would refund our money. We couldn’t say NO!

Here’s a list to help you see why each are important!

Headaches/Migraines — additional info below

Insomnia

Depression

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

Fibromyalgia

Morning Stiffness

Anxiety

Wow…I can say I’ve experienced a few of the above, and I know others who have suffered from them as well. Well, this is some interesting information to tuck away for the next time someone tells you how much they may be suffering from one of the above. As many of you know who’ve been reading along, I’m a huge advocate of trying something natural before taking medication…if at all possible. This being said, how many of you know about Griffonia Seed? Probably not many of you…so you should find this helpful.

Griffonia Seed is part of the Legume Family and is an evergreen that is found in the West and Central African Countries. This amazing herb has been used many different ways but the traditional African way used the juice from the leaves to help with kidney or bladder ailments and the leaves to heal wounds. The seed; however, is used today to help treat the ailments I listed above! Griffonia Seed has been used to relieve the frequency or severity of pain associated with headaches, the pain associated with fibromyalgia and their symptoms, and it has demonstrated the ability to raise serotonin levels in one’s brain to provide relief from depression, anxiety, and insomnia. This herb has shown through tests to improve the length of time and the depth of sleep for people who suffer from insomnia! It’s also been shown to improve one’s mood and well-being!

Isn’t it amazing to think that an herb can do so much good for so many different diseases or ailments? I know that this isn’t new information, that many pharmaceutical drugs use the same ideas; however, why not try the herb by itself in it’s natural form? Might that be a better fit for our bodies? How will we know if we don’t try?

Please remember that any of this information is strictly educational and not intended to diagnose or cure ailments or diseases. Each person is very different and should always consult a physician before adding supplements to their diet. If you take any MAO inhibitors, Griffonia Seed isn’t recommended…please consult a physician!

I hope you enjoyed this post, as I found it interesting since I have suffered from headaches since college. I was diagnosed in college with tension headaches, then possible migraine headaches, and now they’re strictly allergy headaches…which are as debilitating as a migraine! Recently I received information from a friend of the family about another Vitamin that can help give relief for anyone suffering from headaches or Migraines. How many of you have heard of B-2 or Riboflavin? This is a very important B Vitamin and contributes to the 8 B Vitamins that we need to help change our carbohydrates into energy for our bodies! To know more about the B Vitamins, check out The University of Maryland Medial Center. Many of us, for many different reasons, may be deficient in certain vitamins…like B-2! B-2 has shown in some studies to have reduced the pain and length of time a migraine may affect people. I can personally tell you that I have started taking B-2, and I’ve noticed a considerable difference. This being said, it’s something that has to be consistent daily…I don’t believe you’ll see a difference by taking the vitamin as you feel the headache coming on.

Cheers to Learning Something New!!

Children need Bedtime stories and Parents Need a Wake Up Story…

I wanted to upload this video for viewers to see. What an amazing video. It really does put things in perspective. It makes me realize that adopting a Greener Lifestyle for our family and learning how to do it at attractive prices pays off. As you watch the video, it really does speak to you about the way things are today…and it’s quite scary. I am a firm believer that we need to start being more proactive, doing our own research, and not depending on others to keep ourselves and our families safe. It really isn’t that hard to take that first step into developing a safer home and place for your kids and family! Ask me How!!

**For any breastfeeding moms out there…I just want to say that before viewing this video, it isn’t saying that bottle feeding is better…check out HealthyChild.org to see that they are indeed big breastfeeding advocates!!!** I made it to 13 months with my own son, and I would have gone longer had he not weaned himself
